A little late...but better late than never! :)
In a previous post, Makeup Basics Part 1, finishing
and setting powders was discussed and there was a brief mention of setting
sprays. Now that setting sprays are becoming a more popular alternative product,
it seems timely to review a setting spray. Some popular settings sprays include
Urban Decay’s All Nighter, MAC’s Fix but specifically today’s post will focus
on a personal review of the 10 Years younger makeup setting spray by Motives
Cosmetics (by Loren Ridinger).
Being the
nature of this post is a review of a particular product, it will be from a more
subjective nature but without bias. Lissa
Jaye Makeup Artistry is not affiliated, sponsored or connected to Motives
Cosmetics in any way.
Motives cosmetics first launched in 1997, the main purpose
and mission of the brand was to enable women on any budget to experience and
enjoy high quality makeup at affordable prices. The brand’s cosmetic lines
feature products containing antioxidants and vitamins to enhance ones beauty, it
also includes a mineral makeup range for those with sensitive skin. Since 2009 the brand has grown in popularity
and is now even used by some world famous celebrities.
As women we can often be skeptical of products that say high
quality at affordable prices. We wonder what we are actually getting. Is it
really the high quality they say it is? The only way to decide these types of
things is to try and test the products yourself and decide one whether it is
right for you.
When first deciding on purchasing the 10 years younger
makeup setting spray, I had a few uncertainties. Does it really work? Does it
work as well as they say? Is it worth the price? Will it be ok for my super
sensitive skin?
Skin down-low: Dry/Combination,
very fair, burn easily, prone to eczema and psoriasis. Anything too hydrating and
rich equals allergy breakout, anything with too many active ingredients equals allergy
breakout. Usually requires a test run of a product for 1-3weeks to test for
allergy irritation pimples, (different to your regular breakout pimples).
Why is it a worthwhile product for a makeup artist or
personal use? The main advantage to a setting spray is no colour matching. It
can be used on every client that comes through the door or for personal use
means no longer having to adjust for winter/summer skin colour change. Being a
spray it also means no brushes or sponges are required for its application. This
means in the long run a big dollar saving for everyone.
After hearing the representatives who are local makeup
artists like myself, (Contact me, if you would like to be linked to Perth
or Melbourne (Australia) reps). I decided it was worth a try, and definitely
something worthwhile to stock in my kit. The 10 years younger setting spray is
classed in Motives Cosmetics Best Sellers and purchasable for AUD RRP$45. At
first one might ask, is this an affordable price? Yes, yes it is. Why? Because
it lasts quite a long time! I have been using the spray for the last 3-4months,
almost every day. The bottle is still ¾s full. You need very little when you
spray it.
My personal thoughts
on the spray are, I love it! I have had no skin sensitivities with it and I
love how after you spray it on it gives the skin a gorgeous hydrated, healthy
glow and line and pore reduced appearance. It sets within seconds and leaves no
residue. Does it stand the test of heat? Yes. Perth is known for its hot
summers, 30-40 degree heats. Of course you are still going to sweat but your
makeup barely moves and wastes away. It even stood the test of humidity and
rain on a trip to Singapore.

One thing to note, some of you might know of the Skindinavia
brand and their makeup setting sprays.
The Motives Cosmetics 10 years younger makeup setting spray says on the
back of the bottle “Manufactured by Skindinavia”. On inspection at the
Skindinavia website, they too have a setting spray called ’10 years younger’ ,
with Skindinavia having a range of six setting sprays, marking the 10 years
younger setter as for mature skins, their AUS RRP$39.95. Whilst Motives
Cosmetics only having two in their range, both with similar or the same names
as those at Skindinavia. Having never
tried or seen the Skindinavia products cannot offer any comments on whether
there are differences in the products themselves.
